I understand modern conservative thought. I understand libertarian thought. I even understand classical liberalism.
What I can’t begin to comprehend is modern liberalism. Maybe you can help me.
As near as I can tell, to be a liberal today:
You have to believe the AIDS virus is spread by a lack of funding.
IF there is a church that is valid it has been pre-approved by the government.
You have to be against capital punishment but for abortion on demand … in short, you support protecting the guilty and killing the innocent.
You have to believe that the same public school idiot who can’t teach 4th graders how to read is qualified to teach those same kids about sex.
You have to believe that everyone on the internet is a pervert BUT the school officials who want to do vaginal exams on your daughter without telling you have your best interest at heart.
You have to believe that trial lawyers are selfless heroes and doctors are greedy and overpaid.
You have to believe that guns in the hands of law-abiding Americans are more of a threat than nuclear weapons in the hands of the Red Chinese, North Koreans, and Iranians.
You have to believe that global temperatures are less affected by cyclical, documented changes in the brilliance of the Sun, and more affected by yuppies driving SUVs.
You have to believe that gender roles are artificial but being gay is natural.
You have to believe that businesses create oppression and governments create prosperity.
You have to believe that hunters don’t care about nature but pasty, fey activists who’ve never been outside Seattle do.
You have to believe that self-esteem is more important than actually doing something to earn it.
You have to believe there was no art before federal funding.
You have to believe the military, not corrupt politicians, start wars.
You have to believe the free market that gives us 500+ channels can’t deliver the quality that PBS does.
You have to believe the NRA is bad, because they stand up for certain parts of the Constitution, while the ACLU is good, because they stand up for certain parts of the Constitution. You have to believe that taxes are too low but ATM fees are too high.
You have to believe that Harriet Tubman, Cesar Chavez and Gloria Steinem are more important to American history than Thomas Jefferson, George Washington Robert E. Lee or Thomas Edison.
You have to believe that standardized tests are racist, but racial quotas and set-asides aren’t.
You have to believe second-hand smoke is more dangerous than HIV.
You have to believe Hillary Clinton is really a lady and Rosie O’Donnell is not really a man who is jealous of Tom Selleck.
You have to believe conservatives are racists but that black people couldn’t make it without your help.
You have to believe that the only reason socialism hasn’t worked anywhere it’s been tried is because the right people haven’t been in charge.
Looking back on my list, it seems shallow, muddled, contradictory, divorced of logic and a bit sadistic.
Well, then.
If that doesn’t describe the modern American liberal, I don’t know what does.
Don’t bet on it. Nancy Pelosi, according to her statement recently says that if they are locked out from creating their health care plan she is planning to “pole vault in”, or “parachute in” to make their healthcare bill a reality this year. And just exactly what is it she is planning to “pole vault” or “parachute” over? It is the will of the American people who by significant majorities do not want a federal takeover of the American health care industry.
Recently Canadian members of Parliment have been in the news for traveling to the US for medical treatment. Liberal MP Belinda Stronach traveled to California in June for breast cancer treatment. Another MP was in the news in the last month for also traveling to the US for treatment. No wonder US lawmakers who are trying to implement a similar system want to exempt themselves from it. They know it will cause a drop in the quality of health care available in the US. Unlike Canadian MPs they will not have another country with an outstanding health industry right on their southern border to fly to if they need care.
Congressional Representative John Fleming MD from Louisiana’s 4th congressional district submitted a bill to require members of congress to enroll in any “public option” they enact for the people of the US. The following is a quote from his office on Feb 5th concerning this bill.
“Like many of you, I am deeply concerned that Congress will press forward to enact an intrusive government administered health care plan, despite the higher costs and lowered level of care other countries with similar systems have experienced.”
“You will be pleased to know that more than 100 Members of Congress joined in support of H. Res. 615, my common sense measure calling on Members who vote for an intrusive government-administered health care plan to enroll in that system. Since launching this effort, nearly 3 million Americans like you have contacted my office in support of H. Res. 615. In response I offered an amendment to the Democratic Leadership health care bill to automatically enroll all Members of Congress and all Senators in the public option. Predictably, my amendment was rejected out of hand by the Majority and was not given a vote on the floor of the House of Representatives.”
Numerous examples have surfaced in recent months of people from Canada, Britain, and other European countries that travel to the US for treatment because of nonavailability of needed care or life-threatening delays to get such care under their publicly funded plans. The US news media has been predictably quiet about such because of their blind support of the liberal leadership in Washington.
Many claim that the public health care system will lower costs, but the numbers simply don’t compute. In Canada for example the average family pays 48% of their income in taxes each year. Although the costs vary slightly by province, Ontario reports it spends 40% of total tax revenue for health care according to the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, a group that campaigns for tax reform.
That implies that families in Canada are being taxed almost 20% of their total income for health care with no ability to opt out of it. That much will buy one heck of a good health insurance program here in the US without the extensive delays to get access to specialists that is the norm for Canadians. The Canadian Medical Association states that there is an estimated four million of Canada’s 33 million population that don’t have a family doctor and more than one million people are currently waiting for treatment. Those waits commonly run three to six months or more just for access to specialists, even for critical and life-threatening conditions. These waits usually measure only a few days in the US.
Unfortunately, that is only the “tip of the iceberg”. According to the Canadian Taxpayers Federation, the system is suffering serious financial challenges. It calculates that at the current rates of cost growth, by 2035 Ontario will be spending 85 per cent of its total budget on healthcare!
Doctors in my county are leaving the profession primarily because of the federal meddling in their profession now. Medicare is grossly underfunded and only pays the doctors a very small percentage of their normally billed amounts for services. That is why medicare patients often can not find family doctors. Doctors simply can not afford to provide care when the “single payer” only pays them 10 to 20% of their normally billed fees. In some cases of tests performed by outside services, but billed by the practitioner, the costs they have to pay for the tests are less than the medicare reimbursement they receive! I know that figure sounds unbelievable, but my wife and I are on medicare and routinely review the records for our treatments. What I have quoted is common of the “authorized” amounts reimbursed by the medicare system that we have seen in the records of our care.
Older doctors are taking early retirements at an alarming rate and US medical schools are not keeping pace with replacements. In our community, out of some 60 doctors in private practice that are 50 or more years old over 80% of them have told local sources they will immediately close their practices if the current bills are passed.
Congress is out of touch and out of control. They are coming up with more and more federal programs that are taking away our liberty and destroying our economy. They create bills that include “unfunded mandates” that require the states or local government to provide services without providing funds to do so. They are bankrupting the states with their blatant violations of the 10th amendment and the usurpation of other authority denied to them under the US Constitution.
The US Post Office is facing bankruptcy, medicare is facing bankruptcy, social security is facing bankruptcy, and the current administration is submitting a new federal budget that includes spending 30% more than it expects to take in for next year. That is a pretty good definition that the government as a whole is currently bankrupt and yet it wants to continue spending more and more!
Current proposals are claimed to be necessary to provide needed health insurance to the uninsured. Actually they will destroy the integrity of the outstanding health care industry we have today. Why should we go down a road that our neighbors to the north are trying to figure out how to extradite themselves from today?
Simple legislation can correct the current problems that people in the US have in maintaining health insurance coverage. 1) Allow people to take their health care insurance with them when they change jobs, or states. 2) Eliminate the arbitrary restrictions that prevent Americans from purchasing health insurance outside of their state. If you can buy automotive insurance out of state, why not health insurance? 3) Provide the much needed tort reform to reduce the nuisance lawsuits that add as much as 30% to the costs of health care. The threats of unfounded lawsuits are driving doctors out of a number of critical medical specialties at a high rate.
There is no justification for an inept government bureaucracy to take over control of the medical industry in the US, especially when the performance of such systems elsewhere is so demonstratively poor. There should be no government bureaucrat standing between citizens and their doctor. Contact your representative and senators and tell them to get Washington’s financial house in order and leave the greatest healthcare system in the world alone!

Johnny undergoes 5 years of therapy.
JUST HOW STUPID HAVE WE BECOME?No wonder so many kids today are a mess.
The campaigning is over, the votes are cast, the decision is in. Now the fingers are pointing. “Coakley was a weak candidate.” “She didn’t work hard enough.” “She didn’t have the ‘fire in her belly.’” “She made too many gaffes.”
All these finger pointing exercises are phony. The race for the senate seat formerly held by Ted Kennedy was lost in Washington, not in Massachusetts. A month ago Coakley had a traditional Massachusetts style Democrat lead in the polls. This is expected since Democrats outnumber Republicans by more than three to one there. Obama won this state by over twenty points and Coakley’s lead at that time was similar. After all, this was the most secure senate seat in the nation for the Democrats.
Then some things happened far away in DC. The Democrats in the senate used their super majority to pass “Obamacare” without one single vote from the opposition party. They did it with back room deals closed to the public view where they bought off votes with bribes and blackmail. Such was the massive $300 million dollar Louisiana Purchase wherein Mary Landrieu became the “most expensive prostitute in history”. This was followed by an even more egregious deal with Nebraska in which the other forty nine states would pay Nebraska’s share of the taxes to support Obamacare.
They shut out the opposition party from any participation in the drafting of the bill while it was formatted by lobbyists, unions, and other favored groups behind closed doors and far from the public view. This in spite of their pledge to be the most open and honest administration ever.
After passage of the bill they immediately began the house/senate conference process once again behind closed doors. When specifically questioned as to why they were not letting Cspan cameras into the process as Obama promised at least eight times during the campaign, Pelosi laughed and said, “A lot of things are said on the campaign trail.” Take that America!!
Basically the Democrat leadership thumbed their noses at the American public. They lied about being open, honest, and above board while conducting themselves in a despicable and tyrannical manner. The were acting in a most elitist and undemocratic way while obviously lying about their every action in the assumption that the stupid American public didn’t know the difference.
Then the state of Massachusetts began the process to elect a new senator to fill an open seat vacated by Ted Kennedy’s death. Their state had passed a universal healthcare bill several years ago and now they were being asked to pay more taxes for the rest of the nation to do likewise. Already their state was running into financial trouble trying to pay for their system and they were being tasked to fund Nebraska too? Surely you’ve gotta be kidding!
The result was very predictable to anyone with a half a brain. All Scott Brown had to do was drive around the state in his truck and point out that the Democrats were treating them as a bunch of idiots. He didn’t have to even call on the Republican big hitters to support him. They weren’t needed as long as he could simply point out how Washington was playing Massachusetts and the rest of the nation as a bunch of dummys that weren’t worthy of consideration.
He promised to be the 41st vote to stop Obamacare and he climbed steadily in the polls. He promised to restrain taxes and out of control spending and he climbed higher in the polls. By the time the Democrats figured out this insidious master plan it was too late and the momentum was unstopable. Coakley had already gone on record supporting the entire Obama agenda with its new taxes, higher spending and massive deficits that would just get bigger year by year.
Washington attempted to point the blame at the deficits of the Bush administration but the spin didn’t ring true. After all, Obama’s deficits, by their own calculations, in only the first 20 months will exceed all of Bush’s for the entire eight years of his presidency! Something didn’t compute and it didn’t take much to make the voters understand that!
Now Brown had Obamacare, spending, and government corruption to hammer his opponent with. No wonder he won so handily. The Democrats in Washington had transformed the safest seat in the nation into a totally unwinnable situation.
The only question about this is, will they acknowledge their errors and correct their course to try to regain the trust of the American people as Clinton did after Nov of ‘94? Or will they rely on spin and finger pointing to attempt to assess the blame as has been their habit of late.
My guess is the latter. Obama is not Clinton. Regardless of his promises to govern as a moderate, he is an ideologue with his allegiance placed with a far left agenda. Additionally the left of his party has promised to destroy him if he changes course. He will likely continue on his current path until the inevitable train wreck occurs and that will likely occur somewhere around 9:30 p.m. on November 2nd 2010.
However, other Democrats in the house and senate are likely not to share his view as most of them are facing reelection battles in only a few months. Now that they know the nature of the road they are on I suspect that they will be much less inclined to continue on that Kamikaze path they have followed for the last year.
The most liberal state in the nation has spoken and their message is that they do not want the socialist utopia that Obama, Reid, and Pelosi are serving up. They can figure out that it is a path to ruin even if their leadership can not! If they can figure it out don’t you think the people in the other states might just do likewise?
When I was a kid, my mom liked to make breakfast food for dinner every
now and then. And, I remember one night in particular when she had
made breakfast after a long, hard day at work.
On that evening so long ago, my mom placed a plate of eggs, sausage and
extremely burned biscuits in front of my dad. I remember waiting to
see if anyone noticed! Yet all my dad
did was reach for his biscuit, smile at my mom and ask me
how my day was at school. I don’t remember what I told
him that night, but I do remember watching him smear butter and jelly
on that biscuit and eat every bite!
When I got up from the table that evening, I remember
hearing my mom apologize to my dad for burning the
biscuits. And I’ll never forget what he said: “Honey,
I love burnt biscuits.”
Later that night, I went to kiss Daddy good night and I
asked him if he really liked his biscuits burned. He wrapped
me in his arms and said, “Your Momma put in a hard day
at work today and she’s real tired. And besides – a little
burnt biscuit never hurt anyone!”
You know, life is full of imperfect things…..and imperfect people.
I’m not the best at hardly anything, and I forget birthdays and
anniversaries just like everyone else.
What I’ve learned over the years is that learning to accept
each others faults – and choosing to celebrate each others differences
- is one of the most important keys to creating
a healthy, growing, and lasting relationship.
And that’s my prayer for you today. That you will learn to
take the good, the bad, and the ugly parts of your life and
lay them at the feet of God. Because in the end, He’s the
only One who will be able to give you a relationship where
a burnt biscuit isn’t a deal-breaker!
We could extend this to any relationship. In fact,
understanding is the base of any relationship, be it a
husband-wife or parent-child or friendship!
“Don’t put the key to your happiness in someone else’s
pocket – keep it in your own.”
So Please pass me a biscuit, and yes, the burnt one will
do just fine.!.!.!.!
My dog sleeps about 20 hours a day.
He has his food prepared for him.
He can eat whenever he wants, 24/7/365.
His meals are provided at no cost to him.
He visits the Dr. once a year for his checkup, and again during the year if any medical needs arise.
For this He pays nothing, and nothing is required of him.
He lives in a nice neighborhood in a house that is much larger than He needs, but He is not required to do any upkeep.
If He makes a mess, someone else cleans it up.
He has his choice of luxurious places to sleep.
He receives these accommodations absolutely free.
He is living like a king, and has absolutely no expenses whatsoever.
All of his costs are picked up by others who go out and earn a living every day.
I was just thinking about all this, and suddenly it hit me like a brick in the head,
The editorial writers at the New York Times thought they were getting the White House’s back when they defended cuts to Medicare Advantage last week. In fact, they were validating the blatant dishonesty of administration and congressional officials pushing for the cuts.
In their editorial last Sunday, the Times writers revealed in stunning fashion the lies that have been used to convince increasingly skeptical seniors that their Medicare Advantage benefits won’t be sacrificed to pay for government-run health care.
Dishonesty:
In one breath, the Times claimed the effect of Medicare Advantage cuts will be “modest”:
“Although Republican rhetoric has triggered fears that Medicare Advantage enrollees might lose their coverage entirely if private plans drop out of the system, the real effect of the bill would likely be modest on average.”
Then, literally on the next line, the Times contradicts itself, and stumbles inadvertently on to the truth:
“The value of an enrollee’s added benefits would shrink by more than half from current levels but would not disappear; they would still be worth about $500 a year in 2019 (emphasis added).”
Intimidation:
Medicare Advantage was created to do what the Center for Health Transformation (CHT) has long fought for: To give all seniors more private choices of higher quality health care. It currently provides almost 11 million Americans coverage through private insurance plans. Recent data shows that these seniors have better health outcomes than those in traditional Medicare.
Current legislation in Washington will gut the program. H.R. 3200 in the House will cut Medicare Advantage by $172 billion. The bill sponsored by Sen. Max Baucus in the Senate will cut the popular program by $123 billion.
If you’re just hearing about this now, here’s the reason: When Humana (with whom we’ve worked with in the past at CHT) tried to inform its Medicare Advantage members that Democratic health care reform could lower their benefits, the government ordered them to cease and desist and opened an investigation of the company.
Sen. Jon Kyl (R-Ariz.) subsequently introduced legislation in the Senate Finance Committee to protect the 1st Amendment rights of private insurance companies to criticize health care reform proposals.
Democrats on the committee unanimously defeated the bill.
Hypocrisy: The AARP Sells Out Seniors
But while Humana was censored by the government from talking to its Medicare Advantage enrollees about proposed Democratic cuts, another Medicare Advantage provider — the AARP — has been left free to lobby its members.
Of course the Washington leadership of the AARP is working closely with Democrats on health care reform. Incredibly, the self-appointed voice of America’s seniors supports “reforms” that will cut the benefits — if not the entire Medicare Advantage coverage — of millions of seniors.
How can this be? It’s simple. The AARP is a liberal interest group like any other, and it cut a deal with the party in charge in Washington. In exchange for selling out the seniors it claims to represent, the AARP will get potentially millions in lucrative insurance contracts, and quite possibly something more.
Tell Your Friends We’re Not Going to Take It Anymore
No plan that has to be advanced through dishonesty, intimidation and hypocrisy has the support of the American people.
But all that is required for these tactics to prevail in Washington is for good people to sit back and do nothing.
As debate in Congress continues, here’s what you can do: Send this newsletter to a friend, a co-worker, or a relative who isn’t yet aware of what Washington is doing.
Send this newsletter to your senators and representatives. Let them know that, despite the dishonesty, the intimidation and the hypocrisy, we know what they’re doing.
And we’re not going to take it anymore.
Your friend,
Newt Gingrich
===================================================
Newt’s letter above outlines a lot of what is going on with the liberal establishment in Washington. Contact your representatives and let them know in no uncertain terms that what happened in Virginia and New Jersey Nov 3rd is nothing compared to Nov ‘10 if they continue the current pattern. Contact your friends, and anyone else that will listen and tell them what you think about the sell out of seniors in America!
Many of us seniors have depended on the AARP for years for information, cost saving offers, and representation of seniors interests. We can not depend on them to do that and we can not sit by like sheep while they accept our membership fees at the same time they sell us out in Washington while lying to us to boot! Let them know what you think by cutting up your AARP card and sending it back to them!
There is an alternative with the American Seniors Association. Perhaps even a better suggestion is to cut up your AARP card and send it to the ASA with your new membership application. They will give you a second years membership for that cut up card! That’s a whole lot more than we are getting from AARP these days.
Check out the American Seniors Association It is a true seniors advocacy organization that has not sold out to the big money offers from Obama and the Washington establishment and it deserves our support.
I have no connection to the ASA and only pass on this information as a service, . . . . and because I am genuinely ticked off big time about what Washington and groups like the AARP are trying to do to our country.
Last night was the best news for the freedom loving American people in the last twelve months. The voters have sent a message to leadership in both parties! They want a return to the principles embodied in the Constitution that made this country great. They want the people sent to Washington to actually represent them!
The American people were duped last year by a presidential candidate who campaigned as a moderate only to govern as a Socialist. The Republican wins of governors races in Virginia and New Jersey is a wake-up call, especially for the “Blue Dog Democrats” regardless of how the White House tries to spin it. Obama campaigned for the Democrats in both states and if anything at all his attempt to “help” likely hurt his democratic candidates there. The old tactic of trying to blame George Bush just doesn’t fly any more.
Anyone that thinks that Obama is still popular with voters needs to have his head examined. According to some polls he has lost more faith with the voters than anyone in the last century other than Nixon in ‘73. Yes he is a personable fellow and his face still gets favorable ratings, but his policies are overwhelmingly rejected by the people whenever they see them. The worsening economy, the attempt to nationalize industry, the government attempt to control first one industry after another and to restrict the rights and freedoms of the American people are not popular concepts. As people see the results of this direction of Obama and the Democratic party they object more and more. That objection showed up in the “Tea Parties” last summer and now at the ballot boxes last night. All indications are that this is just a tiny peek at what is to be expected next November.
The White House has tried to spin this as not a referendum against Obama and Obamacare, but the exit polls speak differently. People don’t like the direction of the country and they are turning against the party in power in a big way. Washington has ignored the “Tea Parties” this year and the people are showing their displeasure in a manner that can not be disputed by rational folks. Of course can you really say Obama and the Democratic leadership are rational folks?
What does this say for the likely 2010 mid term elections? It basically says that if the Republicans put up some straight talking conservative candidates they will likely sweep the slate! However, lest the Republicans grin about the prospects too much, it also showed that if the Republicans pull another “Scozzafava” then the question is up for grabs. People are getting sick and tired of the Republican leaderships actions as well.
There was no party primary in NY to pick a candidate. Party bosses picked an ultra liberal that by her voting record leans even to the left of her Democrat opponent!! In fact by some counts she leans to the left of the majority of her Democratic legislators in the NY assembly! Only on Second Amendment rights does she show any conservative principles. Even Newt Gingrich endorsed her under his concept of the “big tent” principle for the party . To his credit, when it became apparent that she was not a loyal Republican, he endorsed Hoffman and worked to try to help him get elected. Dede Scozzafava was given some $900,000 during the last month of her candidacy by the Republican party. This is money donated by persons who thought they are supporting candidates that stand for basic Republican principles and instead it goes to someone who would have voted right down the line with the Democrats and Obamaites in Washington!
She used that money primarily to campaign against her Conservative party opponent. He was a long time Republican who ran as the Conservative party candidate after he was repulsed by Republican party bosses. Then to add insult to injury, when she saw she was running third in a three party race she pulled out on the eve of the election and endorsed the Democrat!! Wow, what an insult to the donors of the Republican party.
As a result the conservative candidate, Doug Hoffman, lost the election by three points while Scuzzball still got 5% of the vote even though she has pulled out of the election. This was the largest percentage of the vote ever received in history by a Conservative Party candidate! Had the Republicans picked someone who represented republican views, or failed to support this RINO because of her far left record the Republicans would likely have another vote in the house next year.
This sends a real message to the Republican contributors. “If you want your donations to go to people that share your views, don’t give it through the Republican party.” This will definitely bite the Republican party on the posterior! Conservative Republicans will not be nearly so eager to donate their hard-earned cash to a party that will squander it on RINOs who don’t reflect their views.
Democrats should take note of the two governorships that were lost last night. If they continue as they have been doing and don’t pay attention to the people, they had best have another occupation lined up for when they get fired next November! Republicans need to recognize that there is no advantage to having someone with an “R” in their name that votes with the opposition the vast majority of the time.
Yep. This off year election carries a big message to both parties. The majority of Americans are still basically conservative people and do not want the socialist agenda we are seeing being forced on our country. We want our representatives to actually represent us, not George Soros. We want our Constitution back!
